The world-wide Legion of Mary was started in Dublin, Ireland on the eve of the Feast of Our Lady's Nativity, September 7, 1921, by Frank Duff, Servant of God.
The Legion is organized on the model of the most efficient army of ancient Rome. The enemy here are those resisting the will of God. So, sustained by the Holy Spirit, Legionnaires battle to grow in personal sanctification and to bring God, through Mary, to the world. "The Legion of Mary presents the true face of the Catholic Church" to quote Pope John XXIII. Pope John Paul II called the Legion of Mary a movement of lay people which the church today calls to share in the priesthood of Christ. Membership is composed of practicing Catholics desiring to fulfill their role in the church's apostolate through the Legion. Active members enter a Praesidium as a Probationary for three months and experience the duties that the Legion requires.
For those who cannot perform the duties of active members, auxiliary membership, requiring a few daily prayers with the Rosary, is the basis of a large supporting body for the works and success of the Legion.
The Presidium of the Church of Saint Rose, Belmar is named "Our Lady, Star of the Sea." The next higher council is the "Immaculate Conception Curia" of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The highest counsel is the "Conciliune Legionis" in Dublin. Frank Duff, Alfonso Lambe and Edel Quinn are deceased members who have been declared "Servant of God" or "Blessed" on the journey to being declared Saints.
